Is a popular baby seat set for second recall?

Parents of young babies in Atlanta will be interested to note a possible design problem with a popular baby seat, which could make it a dangerous product. A number of consumer groups are asking the Consumer Product Safety Commission to recall the Bumbo Baby Seat manufactured by Bumbo International over fears that children will fall out and suffer severe head injuries.

According to the groups behind the push for a recall, the issue is in the design of the baby seat. Currently, the product allows babies to be placed into the cushioned seat, but there is not an option to secure the child in with a strap. The company believes adding a strap would merely give parents a "false sense of security." To date, the seat is believed to have led to 33 skull fractures in cases where infants have fallen out of the seat.

Is your doctor being honest with you?

People in Atlanta expect that their doctors will provide them with the best care possible. People also assume that their physicians are providing them with the truth, but one study has revealed that doctors may not be as honest as people think.

A national survey of more than 1,800 doctors recently revealed that almost twenty percent of physicians have at some point withheld information about a medical mistake from a patient. Ten percent of doctors surveyed have lied to a patient within the past year and more than half of the doctors surveyed admitted to giving an overly optimistic prognosis to patients.

Teen loses family in tragic car accident

Life can change in an instant. One moment someone can be living a comfortable life, and before a person can even realize what happened, life is unrecognizable. A 15-year-old girl from the Atlanta area has learned this in a far too difficult way, losing her entire family in a horrific traffic accident.

The fatal accident involved many vehicles and claimed the life of the girl's mother, her father and older sister. The teenager is now left to ponder how she is going to pick up the pieces of her life and try to cope with her pain.

Hospital accused of negligence after patient falls

As the result of an incident that occurred in 2008, a medical malpractice suit has been filed alleging hospital negligence. The incident involves a woman who says she was escorted to a hospital bathroom and then left unattended. When she gave up hope that anyone would assist her, she attempted to get up on her own and fell. She suffered injuries to her head, back, neck and leg.

Proper patient care is an issue across the United States and here in Georgia. Unfortunately, Georgia hospitals are not immune to such a lapse in patient care. Incidents like this, where a patient's needs are not being properly attended to, are likely taking place in hospitals every day, but people might not realize it is happening. It is only when people hear that someone is hurt that they may realize there is a problem. Patients need to be vigilant about the medical treatment they receive so the next story they read like this is not about a hospital in Atlanta.

Witnesses speak out: stories differ in Union City police shooting

When a loved one is lost due to negligent or careless conduct, the victim's survivors have the legal right to seek compensation from the person or people responsible for the wrongful death. In addition to negligent and careless conduct, reckless conduct that results in a tragedy can also give rise to wrongful death claim in Georgia.

Last month, tragedy struck when someone fired a shot in the air in Union City. According to witnesses, as a young man ran away from the scene of a confrontation with police, he was twice shot in the back by a law enforcement officer, which inflicted a deadly injury.

Truck accidents can halt traffic and disrupt lives

South of the Atlanta area, a car and semi-truck accident in Brooks County wreaked havoc for drivers on Georgia Highways 122 and 133. The accident shut down the highways for hours, leaving morning rush hour commuters stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic with no way out.

Thankfully, no one died in the accident, though the five people involved are probably lucky to be alive. The accident was actually two separate car accidents involving three vehicles-a van, a car and a log truck. First, a van slammed into the side of the log truck. The visibility on the road was low because of a combination of fog and smoke from a planned burning nearby. After the log truck collided with the van, a car, which was also driving in fog and smoke, crashed into the truck. The third vehicle became pinned underneath the log truck.

Tracking Hospital Infections - Knowledge is Power

Could Your Next Hospital Visit Kill You? The Information You Need To Know...

It isn't only what gets you to the hospital that can kill you. According to the latest statistics compiled by the Center for Disease Control, 1 out of every 20 hospitalized patients will contract a healthcare associated infection (HAI) during their hospital stay. This means that each year roughly 1.7 million people in America will acquire an infection while in the hospital that they didn't have when they arrived. Of those 1.7 million people, about 100,000 of them will die as a result of their healthcare associated infection.

In order for Georgia's citizens to protect themselves from hospitals with particularly high rates of infection, it is important for residents to have access to Georgia hospital infection statistics. Unfortunately, unlike 28 other states that mandate such information be kept and made publicly available, Georgia hospitals are not required to reveal these statistics and generally choose not to. While legislation has been introduced that would make reporting on healthcare associated infections mandatory, that legislation has yet to pass. Meanwhile, Georgia citizens remain unable to access the information they need to protect themselves.

To put into perspective the dangers that you and your family face right here in the state of Georgia, let's take a look at some recent numbers out of Emory Hospital in Atlanta. A "central-line" infection is an infection arising from an IV that can be deadly. Most hospitals across the country report less than 4 of these types of infections each year. Emory had a whopping 36 of these infections last year. That number means that of the more than 3,000 hospitals across America, Emory had more "central-line" infections than all but 3 of those hospitals.

With numbers as staggering and as frightening as these so close to home, it is important to know what steps you can take to protect yourself and your family. First, don't be afraid to ask your medical facility what their infection rates are or how their rates compare to other local and national hospitals. After all it is information you need in order to make informed decisions about your healthcare. Second, take care to recognize and place added emphasis on these statistics if you or your family members are particularly susceptible to infection. While any hospital patient can contract a healthcare associated infection, some individuals, such as the young and the elderly, are certainly more vulnerable than others. Finally, be an advocate for yourself. If you see practices or actions taken by hospital staff that concern you, tell someone about it. It is natural to trust our caregivers and medical professionals when we are sick and vulnerable, but until legislation requires infection statistics be made accessible to the public, acting as a zealot advocate for yourself and your family is your best defense against these silent invisible killers.

If you or a family member has contracted a healthcare associated infection, you may be entitled to recover for the expenses and suffering associated with that infection. Please click the link below to find out if you have a claim today.

Atlanta-based former NFLers sue league over brain injuries

Brain injuries are both difficult to treat and difficult to detect. Often, victims of brain injuries will not realize the full extent of their injuries until months, or years, have elapsed. Now, we are seeing reports that four former National Football League players are suing the league in Atlanta over brain injuries and concussions that they claim affected them for years following retirement.

Jamal Lewis, Fulton Kuykendall, Dorsey Levens and Ryan Stewart recently filed the lawsuit against the NFL in the U.S. District Court in Georgia's capital city.

Defective products hurt county water supply

Products liability is a major source of litigation in the United States. Defective products can have serious, even deadly consequences, and litigation is sometimes the only tool available to hold companies accountable.

In Coweta County, Georgia, the local board of commissioners and the water and sewage authority recently reached a settlement in a products liability lawsuit the county brought against Orangeburg Industries and others.

Historical civil verdict in tragic burn injury case

A Texas jury awarded a family a multi-billion dollar settlement in a civil case, the largest that this country has seen. An 8-year-old boy had suffered serious burn injuries on his birthday. Allegedly he was doused with gasoline and set on fire; an act that many believe was an intentional attack.

People may see the news story about the large settlement award and assume that the family filed a civil suit in order to get money. But often the real intent is not necessary financial motivation but a family moved to seek justice. The boy's family does not expect to ever receive a dollar of the award, but instead hope that this verdict will protect other children in the future.
